US Marine Indicted in Okinawa Murder Case
Lance Corporal Devin Jacob Ballard faces robbery and murder charges in the death of Anna Yagi.
Japanese prosecutors have indicted a US Marine on charges of robbery and murder in connection with the death of a Japanese woman in Okinawa, according to media reports.
Lance Corporal Devin Jacob Ballard, assigned to Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, is accused of strangling 39-year-old Anna Yagi with a telephone cord and stealing her wallet from a hotel in Naha, the prefectural capital. He has denied the allegations.
The indictment, reported by NHK, was issued by the Naha District Public Prosecutors’ Office. The office could not be reached for comment outside of business hours.
This case has led to protests in Okinawa and Tokyo, drawing condemnation from Japanese political leaders. In response, US Forces Japan implemented a curfew and an alcohol ban for personnel stationed in Okinawa. The incident is the latest in a series of events involving US service members on the island chain that have fueled unease regarding the significant US military presence near Taiwan and China.
The III Marine Expeditionary Force acknowledged awareness of Ballard's indictment. "We recognize the seriousness of the charges and will continue to cooperate fully with Japanese authorities in their ongoing investigation as the legal process moves forward," the force said in a statement.
