US Marine Arrested in Okinawa on Suspicion of Murder and Robbery
A 20-year-old service member stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Futenma faces charges after a woman was found dead in a Naha hotel.
A 20-year-old U.S. Marine has been arrested in Naha, Okinawa, on suspicion of murder and robbery following the discovery of a woman's body in a hotel room. The Marine, identified by Japanese media as Devin Jacob Ballard, is reportedly stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Futenma.
Authorities took Ballard into custody after the body of 39-year-old Anna Yagi was found early Saturday. Police allege that Ballard killed Yagi between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. before stealing her wallet and other personal belongings.
The discovery was made when hotel staff entered Yagi's room after she failed to check out by the designated time. A hotel employee unlocked the door and found Yagi unresponsive. Emergency services were called around 4:20 a.m., but Yagi was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators initially sought a man seen entering the hotel with Yagi and later leaving alone, based on surveillance footage. The footage showed the suspect carrying the woman's belongings as he exited the hotel. He was described as having a shaved head, wearing a black tank top, three-quarter length pants, and white sneakers. The stolen items were later recovered near the hotel.
The exact circumstances surrounding Yagi's death and the relationship between her and Ballard remain unclear. Ballard is assigned to Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, a significant U.S. military installation on Okinawa that serves as a key hub for Marine Corps operations in the Indo-Pacific region.
Okinawa hosts a substantial U.S. military presence, including III Marine Expeditionary Force and Marine Corps Installations Pacific, alongside numerous Marine Corps installations. This presence means thousands of American service members are stationed on the island.
