A 20-year-old Marine stationed at Futenma was taken into custody after a woman was found dead in a Naha hotel.
A 20-year-old U.S. Marine has been arrested on suspicion of murder and robbery in Naha, Okinawa, after a woman was found dead in a hotel room. The Marine, identified by Japanese media as Devin Jacob Ballard, is reportedly stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Futenma.
He was taken into custody after the body of 39-year-old Anna Yagi was discovered early Saturday. Police suspect Ballard killed Yagi between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. before stealing her wallet and other belongings. The discovery was made when Yagi failed to check out of her hotel room by the designated time. A hotel employee entered the room and found Yagi unresponsive, prompting emergency services to be called. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators reviewed surveillance footage that showed a man and woman entering the hotel together, with the man later emerging alone. According to police, the suspect was seen leaving the hotel with the woman's belongings. The footage described the suspect as having a shaved head, wearing a black tank top, three-quarter length pants, and white sneakers. The stolen items were later found scattered around the hotel.
The exact circumstances of Yagi's death and the nature of her relationship with Ballard remain unclear. Marine Corps Air Station Futenma is a significant U.S. military installation on Okinawa, serving as a key hub for operations in the Indo-Pacific region. The island hosts a substantial U.S. military presence, including thousands of American service members.
The Okinawa Prefectural Police are continuing their investigation into the incident.
