US Marine arrested in Okinawa on suspicion of murder

A U.S. Marine has been arrested in Okinawa, Japan, on suspicion of murder after a woman's body was discovered in a hotel. Japanese officials have expressed outrage and called for improved discipline among American forces stationed in the prefecture.

The victim was identified by NHK as 39-year-old Yagi Anna, and the suspect as 20-year-old Devin Jacob Ballard, who is assigned to the U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Futenma. Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi stated that the woman's body was found early Saturday morning in a hotel in Naha City, the capital of Okinawa prefecture.

"Such an incident is utterly inexcusable and fills me with strong indignation," Koizumi wrote on social media, adding that incidents involving U.S. military personnel cause significant anxiety to the local community. Okinawa Governor Genta Koja echoed these sentiments, stating that the prefecture has repeatedly asked the U.S. to prevent such incidents and views the alleged crime as a sign of a lack of discipline.

The Marine Corps acknowledged the allegations and stated, "We are actively cooperating with Japanese authorities, in response to allegations of serious criminal actions by a Marine," and extended condolences to the victim's family.

The U.S. Embassy in Tokyo confirmed its full cooperation with the Japanese government and local police. Japan's foreign ministry summoned U.S. Ambassador George Glass on Sunday to discuss the matter. The Japanese government has lodged a formal protest with the U.S., demanding that military officials take action.

Okinawa hosts numerous U.S. military bases and tens of thousands of American troops. This incident adds to ongoing tensions in the region regarding the presence of U.S. forces and their conduct.
