Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has initiated "Operation Economic Outcast," a comprehensive global effort aimed at severing all financial support for Iran's regime. The campaign seeks to choke off the remaining sources of funding for Tehran, which is already facing significant economic strain.

This initiative complements the U.S. military's efforts to intercept oil shipments from the Strait of Hormuz. The strategy relies on the threat and imposition of U.S. secondary sanctions, which can target private banks, brokers, exchanges, aviation service providers, shippers, insurers, and even state-owned enterprises. These sanctions can disrupt trade, halt financial flows, and impact the movement of goods and cryptocurrency.

Such actions can lead to diplomatic ruptures, economic instability in targeted countries, and potential ripple effects in the global economy. Past examples include the U.S. intervention that affected the Turkish lira to secure the release of an American pastor and measures taken against China's COSCO shipping company to stop its transport of Iranian cargo.

U.S. diplomats and Treasury attachés are currently engaging with international counterparts to outline the necessary steps for compliance. The directive is clear: countries must cease all dealings that support Iran, or they risk facing U.S. sanctions themselves. Key areas of enforcement focus include Iranian bank branches operating abroad, digital assets, technology, gold, aviation, and shipping.

Recent reports indicate severe economic challenges within Iran. President Masoud Pezeshkian has reportedly suggested ending the conflict, following warnings from Iran's central bank governor about dire economic consequences. The National Iranian Oil Company's bank accounts have been frozen due to unpaid debts, inflation has surpassed 100%, and the Iranian currency has significantly devalued against the dollar. Reports also mention increasing gasoline shortages and unrest among IRGC soldiers due to delayed payments.

Simultaneously, U.S. military operations are reportedly increasing the volume of oil being moved out of the Strait of Hormuz. Officials have cited substantial volumes of oil being intercepted in recent operations.

The strategy involves three core components: enforcing a blockade alongside economic warfare, increasing oil extraction from Hormuz, and leveraging American energy dominance to diminish Iran's influence. President Trump is reportedly pursuing this approach.
