The United States is investigating whether a missile strike that hit a wedding ceremony in Iran and killed at least four people originated from a US source, according to Senator Rand Paul.
The Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) reported that shrapnel from a missile struck the ceremony on Tuesday, killing four people and injuring 67. State media later reported that a fifth person, a 22-year-old woman, died in the hospital. The victims were identified locally as Zarkhatoon Taheri, 50; Kolsum Mallahi Nazhdnia, 43; Mohammad Mallahi, 16; and Amirali Karimi, four.
Paul expressed skepticism regarding Iranian state media reports on the incident. "I will say that the Iranian state media has not been a very good scribe about what's happened in the conflict thus far. So I'm extremely sceptical of this," Paul stated during a White House briefing. "I know that we're investigating."
Iran has since launched new attacks on US bases in Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates in retaliation for the alleged strike.
