US Inflation Accelerates to 3.7% in September, Exceeding Expectations

Inflation in the United States rose to 3.7% in September, an acceleration from the previous month and higher than economists' predictions, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This increase, largely fueled by soaring energy costs, puts renewed pressure on prices and strengthens the case for the Federal Reserve to consider further interest-rate hikes.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) registered a 3.7% annual increase, up from 3.4% in August. The monthly pace of inflation also saw a rise of 0.6%.

Core CPI, which strips out volatile food and energy components to provide a clearer view of underlying inflation trends, also increased to 2.6% from 2.4% in August, surpassing the estimated 2.5% rise.

The surge in energy prices, attributed in part to the conflict in Iran, was the principal factor behind the September inflation figures. The energy index alone has climbed 20.4% over the last 12 months.
