US F-16 Fighter Jet Crashes at NATO Air Base in Germany

Witnesses in the vicinity, including the mayor of the nearby town of Speicher, reported seeing a jet rapidly losing altitude before smoke became visible. Emergency services were alerted. Residents also observed a column of smoke emanating from the direction of the base.
The Spangdahlem Air Base, located in the Bitburg-Prüm district of Rhineland-Palatinate, is home to a squadron of American F-16s. This squadron plays a significant role in supporting U.S. Air Force and NATO operations worldwide.
The cause of the crash is currently under investigation. This incident echoes a similar event in October 2019, when an F-16 pilot was forced to eject from a jet that crashed near Spangdahlem.
