US Expands Arctic Influence with Greenland Security Agreement Amid Global Instability

The United States has finalized a security agreement with Denmark and Greenland, aimed at bolstering U.S. influence and long-term investment in the strategically vital Arctic island. The deal, signed on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly, comes as global conflicts in Ukraine and Iran highlight the fragility of energy supplies and critical mineral chains.
President Donald Trump's persistent interest in Greenland has brought renewed attention to the island's potential for valuable mineral and oil deposits. This focus intensifies as geopolitical tensions underscore U.S. vulnerabilities and the desire to reduce dependence on foreign sources for essential resources.
"One of the reasons that we are exploring for oil in Greenland is because of what's going on in the Strait of Hormuz right now," Robert Price, CEO of Greenland Energy Company and president of USFM Corporation, told Fox News Digital. Price's companies are pursuing oil exploration and mineral development in Greenland. USFM is exploring for nickel, copper, palladium, and cobalt in western Greenland, commodities crucial for electronics, batteries, and manufacturing. Price suggested the area could rival Russia's Norilsk region in mineral wealth, though exploratory drilling is ongoing.
Greenland Energy Company is also pursuing permits for an exploratory oil well planned for 2027 on the island's eastern side, an area Price believes shares geological similarities with the North Sea's petroleum systems. The company has reported finding oil samples on and below the surface.
The new agreement with Denmark and Greenland reportedly expands the U.S. military presence on the island while affirming Greenland's sovereignty under Danish rule. While full details remain undisclosed, the pact is seen as a move to secure long-term investment by providing greater confidence for companies engaged in resource development.
Greenland's strategic importance is further amplified by its geographic location between North America and Europe, with its territory extending into the Arctic. The U.S. already maintains Pituffik Space Base, its northernmost Defense Department installation, on the island. The U.S. aims to avoid reliance on nations like China and Russia for critical rare earth minerals, essential for modern technology.
The strategic positioning and potential resource wealth of Greenland are becoming increasingly prominent as global supply chains face disruptions. The conflict in the Strait of Hormuz has impacted oil shipments, and the war in Ukraine has made energy infrastructure a focal point.
