U.S. embassies across the Middle East issued warnings Tuesday to American citizens regarding the "potential for unforeseen escalation" as U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) conducted new strikes targeting Iran.
The alerts, posted on the websites of U.S. embassies in Jerusalem, Jordan, and Qatar, advised Americans in the region to "exercise caution and heightened vigilance." The messages also cautioned of potential flight cancellations, periodic airspace closures, and travel disruptions.
CENTCOM stated its forces initiated strikes on Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targets in Iran around 12 p.m. ET. These actions were described as a response to recent attempted attacks by the IRGC against commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and against U.S. service members in the region.
Former Navy captain Brent Sadler analyzed the strikes on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz, noting they followed Iran's launch of eight ballistic missiles toward U.S. military bases in Jordan. U.S. officials reported that all eight missiles targeting the Jordanian base were intercepted.
Former President Donald Trump commented on the events via Truth Social, stating that the strikes were "large and powerful" and in retaliation for Iran's failed attempts to place sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz. He also issued a warning that any further retaliation from Iran would result in more severe U.S. strikes.
U.S. strikes over the preceding weekend had targeted two Iranian rocket launchers on an island in the Strait of Hormuz, marking the first such strikes in approximately a month. According to CENTCOM, Iranian forces were preparing to deploy rockets carrying sea mines into the strait when U.S. forces struck Larak Island.
Embassy warnings also highlighted the complex security environment, noting the "unpredictable" nature of the Iranian regime. The alerts indicated that U.S. diplomatic facilities, including those outside the Middle East, could be targeted, along with other U.S. interests, businesses, and individuals worldwide. The messages stressed that past security in a country does not guarantee future safety for U.S. interests or businesses.
The situation underscores a period of heightened tensions in the Middle East, with the U.S. and Iran engaging in retaliatory actions and issuing stark warnings.
