US Coast Guard Intercepts Migrant Boat Off San Diego Coast

The U.S. Coast Guard intercepted a vessel carrying eight suspected illegal migrants approximately six miles off Point Loma, San Diego, on Tuesday evening. The 21-foot boat was spotted by watchstanders at the Joint Harbor Operations Center, leading to a boarding by a Coast Guard Maritime Safety and Security Team.

After gaining compliance from those aboard, all eight individuals were detained and subsequently transferred to U.S. Border Patrol agents at Ballast Point for further processing and investigation. This event occurred just days after a separate incident in Newport Harbor where a vessel carrying nearly a dozen suspected migrants ran aground, and its occupants reportedly scattered into the affluent neighborhood.

In the Newport Beach incident, authorities were left to review surveillance footage to identify the individuals who fled the scene after their boat struck and damaged a nearby yacht. Newport Beach City Council member Erik Weigand described the event as a "reckless" act with "no regard for safety."

These recent interdictions are part of a series of encounters with migrant vessels in Southern California waters. Previous landings have included incidents where groups quickly dispersed into communities, and other instances where larger groups were rescued at sea after their vessels became disabled. In one case, 37 suspected migrants were found adrift nearly 100 miles offshore after their boat ran out of food, water, and fuel.
