US Captain Benches World No. 1 Scheffler in Bold Presidents Cup Move

U.S. Captain Brandt Snedeker made a significant decision Saturday afternoon at the Presidents Cup, excluding world No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler from the foursomes session despite his morning four-ball victory. Snedeker cited the need to rest Scheffler, who has carried a considerable burden for the American team.

"We were trying to do our best to get these guys in a good situation," Snedeker told reporters. "I love Scottie Scheffler to death, that was a really tough decision to sit him this afternoon. But I wanted to get him some rest and wanted him to get ready to go tomorrow in singles."

The U.S. squad entered Saturday's afternoon session trailing the International team 8.5-5.5. Scheffler and his partner Sam Burns secured a crucial win in the morning four-ball, coming back from one down on the 15th hole to win 2 and 1 against Hideki Matsuyama and Ryo Hisatsune. Burns clinched the match with birdies on holes 16 and 17.

This marks the first time since the 2023 Ryder Cup that Scheffler has been absent from a match during a major team competition. Scheffler, a four-time major champion, has faced scrutiny for his performance in team events in recent years.

"Our team is a great team, and I’m looking forward to going out and supporting the guys," Scheffler commented. Burns was paired with Wyndham Clark for the afternoon foursomes, while other U.S. pairings included Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele, Russell Henley and Jacob Bridgeman, and Cameron Young and Chris Gotterup.

Scheffler was observed cheering on his teammates during the afternoon session and is expected to compete in Sunday's singles matches.
