Much of the United States is preparing for a significant heatwave, with dangerous and potentially record-breaking temperatures forecast through the Fourth of July weekend. The National Weather Service has issued warnings for extreme heat, particularly for central and eastern states, where heat indices could reach up to 115 degrees Fahrenheit.

In New York, the city is anticipating "feels-like" temperatures in the low 100s. Extreme heat watches are already in effect for several regions, including New York City, Long Island, and the Capital Region. Governor Kathy Hochul has advised residents to sign up for weather and emergency alerts by texting 333111.

Conserving Energy Amidst High Temperatures

As temperatures rise, so do concerns about energy consumption and utility bills. Home improvement experts and retailers are offering tips to help individuals stay cool while managing costs.

One suggestion involves optimizing window coverings. Home improvement expert Laura De Barra recommends using heavy duvet covers as a more effective barrier against the sun than traditional curtains, especially on windows that receive direct sunlight throughout the day. She advises keeping windows closed when the outside air is hotter than the inside, ensuring curtains or duvets are drawn to block solar heat.

Home Depot offers advice on optimizing ceiling fans. The company states that the direction of ceiling fan rotation can significantly impact a room's perceived temperature. For summer, ceiling fan blades should rotate counterclockwise. When operating at high speed, this direction pushes cooler air downwards, creating a wind-chill effect. Home Depot suggests that using ceiling fans in this manner can allow individuals to raise their thermostat by up to four degrees and still feel comfortable, potentially reducing energy costs by as much as 30 percent. To adjust the fan direction, a switch on the motor, often located at its base, can typically be flipped.

Improving Home Airflow and HVAC Efficiency

Tips for better airflow and air conditioning maintenance are also being shared. Opening interior doors, such as those to bedrooms, bathrooms, and closets, can enhance air circulation throughout the house, allowing cooler air to distribute more effectively. This is particularly beneficial for homes with open floor plans.

Proper maintenance of air conditioning units is also highlighted as a crucial step in both saving money and ensuring efficient operation. This includes cleaning the exterior unit by gently hosing it down from top to bottom. Furthermore, regularly replacing air filters in HVAC systems is essential. The Department of Energy has noted that HVAC systems account for about half of a home's energy bill. Dirty filters reduce efficiency, forcing the unit to work harder and increasing energy costs. Replacing a dirty filter can lead to savings of up to 15 percent on energy bills. Neglecting filter changes can also risk blower motor failure, leading to more significant repair expenses.
