A nine-year-old American boy sustained critical injuries after being attacked by a pack of six Staffordshire bull terriers at an upscale resort in the Bahamas. The incident occurred last Tuesday morning when the boy, Beau Brattain, was walking to the beach near the Bimini Cove Resort & Marina to collect sand.
An onlooker intervened and chased the dogs away, allowing the boy to return to his family's vacation apartment. His parents discovered him bleeding extensively from numerous bites and lacerations to his face, head, arms, thighs, and legs. Beau was initially treated at a local clinic for his severe wounds before being airlifted by the United States Coast Guard to Miami for emergency surgery. His injuries were described as potentially life-threatening.
Authorities apprehended and euthanized the dogs, which reportedly escaped from an unlocked shed near the resort. Harrington Rolle, 34, a local resident, pleaded guilty in court on Friday to charges including negligently causing grievous harm and permitting a dangerous dog to be at large. He was remanded in custody pending sentencing.
The family, from Miami, has established a GoFundMe page to help cover the significant medical expenses, travel costs, and rehabilitation needs associated with Beau's recovery. The page quickly raised over $220,000 from donors.
"Our hearts are with Aliette and Mikey as they face every parent’s worst nightmare," the family stated on the fundraising page. "While on a family trip to Bimini, their beloved nine-year-old son, Beau, was the victim of a horrific dog attack that left him with severe, life-threatening injuries."
South Bimini, where the incident occurred, is a small island approximately 50 miles off the coast of Florida, known as a destination for American boaters and anglers. The Royal Bahamas Police Force is continuing its investigation into the mauling. The US State Department had issued a travel advisory on the same day as the attack, urging Americans to exercise increased caution in the Bahamas due to warnings about violent crime.
