US and Denmark Finalize Security Agreement for Greenland

The United States and Denmark have reached an agreement concerning security in Greenland, with the deal set to be formally signed next week.
According to a statement from former President Donald Trump, the agreement will provide the U.S. with "permanent control over security, and all other needs" in Greenland. He stated on social media that the pact comes "at no cost to the United States" and empowers the U.S. "to do what is necessary" to "secure and defend the security of Greenland." Trump specified that the agreement prohibits any U.S. adversary from establishing a military presence or making sensitive investments in Greenland without explicit U.S. approval.
Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen confirmed the signing will occur at the United Nations General Assembly. He described the agreement as one that "strengthens our common security in the Arctic and the North Atlantic area" while simultaneously "recognizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom and the right of the Greenlandic people to self-determination."
The accord follows months of discussions and expressed concerns by Trump regarding Greenland's strategic importance for defense purposes and its potential mineral wealth. Danish officials have not yet confirmed the specific details mentioned by Trump regarding U.S. control.
