US Air Force Bombers Removed From UK Base After Suspected Terror Plot

The U.S. Air Force has removed its bombers from a U.S.-run military air base in England after an investigation into a planned terror attack at RAF Fairford. The aircraft have been redeployed to their home bases in the United States, according to a Pentagon official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Dozens of B-52 and B-1 bombers had been operating out of RAF Fairford, a base used to strike Iran, since the beginning of the Iran war. Observers noted a number of B-1 bombers departing the base on Sunday.

The withdrawal coincides with President Donald Trump's consideration of further military actions against Iran. Trump has previously stated that the campaign against Iran would be short-lived.

British authorities arrested a dual British-Iranian national in London last week in connection with the suspected plot. The arrest followed a security incident at RAF Fairford in late September. In total, six individuals were taken into custody and subsequently released on bail as the investigation continues.

U.K. officials have linked the incident to Tehran, which has denied involvement but previously stated that any base used to attack its territory is a legitimate target. U.K. authorities have also warned that proxies linked to Iran have been responsible for a series of attacks in Britain and elsewhere, many targeting the Jewish community, and that Iran could expand its targets if Middle East conflicts persist.

RAF Fairford, located approximately 100 miles west of London, has served as a base for American bombers during numerous conflicts in the Middle East over several decades.

The U.S. military maintains a significant presence in the Middle East. A U.S. official confirmed that the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt and the amphibious readiness group USS Malkin Island, carrying over 7,000 sailors and 2,000 Marines, are en route to the region. This deployment could result in three U.S. aircraft carriers operating in the region by late October.
