US Agencies Investigate Suspicious Letters Sent to Congress
The FBI, Postal Inspection Service, and Capitol Police are probing letters containing unknown substances mailed with a return address linked to the Democratic Socialists of America.
Federal and local law enforcement agencies are investigating letters containing suspicious substances that have been sent to congressional offices, according to internal communications sent to Capitol Hill staff. The FBI, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and the Capitol Police are involved in the probe.
An email alert provided to Hill staff included an image of one of the envelopes. It was postmarked "DSA" and listed a return address at a Financial District building previously associated with the Democratic Socialists of America on membership forms. Officials are working to intercept any further suspicious mail before it reaches its intended recipients, though it is possible some may have already been delivered.
Some of these letters have reportedly been intercepted at addresses other than congressional offices. The agencies involved have not yet responded to requests for comment, and the Democratic Socialists of America also has not immediately responded.
