Actor Brian Baumgartner, known for his role as Kevin Malone in the US version of "The Office," is among six candidates running for the position of rector at the University of St Andrews. The honorary role, elected by the student body every three years, carries significant responsibilities within the university's governance.
Baumgartner visited St Andrews in the summer, according to reports. Students will cast their votes on October 15 and 16.
The current rector, Stella Maris, will not be on the ballot. Maris has been involved in a prolonged dispute with the university. She was initially removed from the University Court in August 2024 for remarks concerning the Israel-Gaza war but was reinstated nine months later after an appeal. Her second dismissal occurred in January 2026 when she objected to proposed changes to the university's governing body. She was reinstated again after altering her position on the governance rules.
One of the candidates, St Andrews alumnus and Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) Liam McArthur, described Maris as having been "mistreated." McArthur stated his intention to run, emphasizing students' need for "safe and affordable housing, more artistic spaces, and the opportunity to express their anger at the state of the world, without fear of risk of isolation."
Joining Baumgartner and McArthur as candidates are Dr. Arthur Bernhoff, a St Andrews graduate and Ministry of Defence analyst; Mark Brunner, a former guest lecturer at the university's School of International Relations; Dr. Conor Philip, a doctor and recent graduate; and Dr. Edison Yau, a student doctor who also recently graduated from St Andrews.
The position of rector is a tradition at Scotland's oldest universities. At St Andrews, the rector serves as the President of the University Court, presiding over meetings that address key decisions on budget allocations and academic policies.
