The man accused of stabbing two individuals in separate hate-motivated attacks on New York City's Upper West Side had writings by Karl Marx in his apartment, according to police.
Raul Morales, 51, faces attempted murder and hate crime charges in connection with the assaults that occurred Thursday. Investigators found the materials while searching Morales' apartment on Amsterdam Avenue, information presented during his arraignment Friday stated.
Police reportedly discovered books by Marx, the influential philosopher and economist, alongside two Qurans, a Jehovah's Witness Bible, and a book about Cuban revolutionary Che Guevara. Details of the findings were obtained by The Post during Morales' Friday night arraignment.
Morales is accused of first stabbing a 57-year-old Asian man in the back near West 84th Street and Central Park West around 1:30 p.m. Thursday. Shortly after, he allegedly attacked Moshe Yezhak Grunhaus, 50, stabbing him in the chest with a screwdriver as Grunhaus, who was wearing a yarmulke, left a synagogue on Amsterdam Avenue and West 86th Street.
Both victims were transported to local hospitals and are in stable condition. Morales was arraigned on two counts of attempted murder, two counts of assault, and one count of attempted assault, all of which are being prosecuted as hate crimes. A judge ordered Morales to undergo a psychiatric evaluation, and he is scheduled to return to court on July 30.
