A pickup truck hauling unsecured metal pipes caused a terrifying collision on an Orange County freeway Thursday, sending cargo through a sedan and nearly striking its driver. The incident, which authorities likened to scenes from the movie "Final Destination," resulted in minor injuries.

The crash occurred when the pickup truck collided with a sedan. Following the impact, unsecured metal pipes from the truck's load were propelled forward, penetrating the sedan's rear window and entering the passenger compartment. Fortunately, the driver sustained only minor injuries.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) stated that if the incident had been fatal, the pickup truck driver could have faced manslaughter charges. Authorities used the close call to reiterate the importance of properly securing loads with methods such as rope, netting, bungee cords, straps, or sturdy tarps.

This event follows a similar incident in Temecula just one week prior, where a metal bar detached from a truck and struck a pregnant woman through her windshield. She and her unborn child were unharmed, suffering only minor injuries.

The danger posed by unsecured cargo is a recurring issue. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, between 2011 and 2014, road debris was a factor in over 200,000 police-reported crashes, leading to 500 fatalities. More recent data from a November 2025 report indicates that between 2018 and 2023, road debris contributed to an estimated 319,724 motor vehicle crashes, 32,802 injuries, and 433 deaths nationwide annually.
