Unsealed Report Shows Racial Stereotypes, Retaliation Against Brian Flores, Lawyers Say
Attorneys for the former NFL coach claim a Korn Ferry report used discriminatory language and punished Flores for his lawsuit.
Lawyers for Brian Flores stated that a recently unsealed report from Korn Ferry contains "racial stereotypes" and constitutes unlawful retaliation against the coach for his discrimination lawsuit against the National Football League. The report, a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press, was prepared in connection with the Las Vegas Raiders’ coaching vacancy in 2024.
Flores' attorneys assert that the report, listing six strengths and seven weaknesses, demonstrates the NFL's continued use of racial stereotypes in its hiring practices and shows unlawful retaliation against Flores. "We and Mr. Flores are committed to eradicating the institutional racism and retaliation that permeates the league, its teams and their partners," said attorney Michael J. Willemin in a statement.
The NFL did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
One listed strength noted Flores is a "polished and a good presenter despite growing up in Brownsville, Brooklyn (same as Mike Tyson). He was able to build a strong friendship with a billionaire’s son which gave him opportunities to socialize and learn how to build relationships with white-collar and upper-class individuals." Brownsville is a predominantly Black and Hispanic neighborhood in Brooklyn.
Among the weaknesses cited, one stated Flores "can fool you with his polish upwards. Has little people skills, lacks self-awareness and can sometimes exhibit erratic behavior. (Former Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s) statements have opened the narrative that Brian was 'pessimistic and adversarial' and his style 'shattered his confidence.'"
Other criticisms included that Flores' "personality is unpredictable" and that he "once threatened violence to his GM and made irrational demands during an ownership meeting." A senior executive reportedly stated Flores "may have changed since, but he was the worst hiring decision we’ve ever made." The report also mentioned that the ongoing litigation related to Flores' discrimination case could be a distraction.
Flores, who is Black, filed a lawsuit against the NFL and three teams in February 2022, alleging systemic racism in the league's hiring practices for Black coaches. He had recently been fired from his head coaching position with the Miami Dolphins. The lawsuit was later joined by fellow Black coaches Steve Wilks and Ray Horton.
