Unranked Auburn Stuns Top-Ranked Georgia With Walk-Off Field Goal
The upset marks the first time since 1990 that the No. 1 team in the nation has lost to an unranked opponent in consecutive weeks.
Auburn defeated No. 1 Georgia 27-24 on a walk-off field goal, marking a significant upset and a rare occurrence in college football history.
For the first time since 1990, the top-ranked team in the nation has lost to an unranked opponent in consecutive weeks. The Bulldogs' loss at home to Auburn comes after they had defeated 53 consecutive unranked opponents.
Georgia established an early 14-0 lead in the first quarter, but Auburn responded by scoring 24 unanswered points. The Bulldogs managed to tie the game in the fourth quarter after a 13-play, 94-yard touchdown drive. However, momentum shifted dramatically when Georgia quarterback Gunnar Stockton fumbled the ball on the ensuing possession, giving Auburn possession with just under a minute remaining.
Auburn advanced the ball to chip-shot range, aided by a roughing the passer penalty. Kicker Alex McPherson then made a 34-yard field goal to secure the upset victory.
Georgia, now 5-1, had climbed to the top spot after defeating Alabama the previous week. The loss could cause the Bulldogs to fall significantly in the rankings, similar to how Texas dropped to No. 7 after its Red River Rivalry loss to Oklahoma.
This marks the first home loss for Georgia to an unranked opponent under head coach Kirby Smart since 2019. The Bulldogs will face Florida next, while Auburn is set to host No. 22 LSU.
