The University of Washington has canceled a planned lecture by progressive Twitch and YouTube commentator Hasan Piker, citing a flawed planning process for the event. Piker, known for his far-left commentary, was scheduled to speak in January as part of the university's 2026-27 Speaker Series.
University officials stated that a review of the event's organization revealed that the process did not meet the necessary level of rigor for university-hosted events in the Speaker Series. "Going forward, procedures will be updated to ensure the standards we have for University-hosted events like the Speaker Series are met, particularly so that we can help elevate the level of dialogue on divisive topics during a polarized time in our country," the university said in a statement.
The cancellation has drawn criticism from First Amendment advocates, including the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE). FIRE stated on X, "If the decision was based on process — and not public backlash or criticism — @UW should be transparent about what standards were not met and how they were applied." The organization added, "Public universities can set standards for events. But they can’t use those standards as cover for canceling a speaker because of their views."
Andrew Kolvet, a spokesperson for Turning Point USA, also commented on X, stating, "Let the radical Mao loving communist Hasan Piker speak, so long as he can resist the urge to call for the death of his political opponents. Universities do this to TPUSA often and blame some admin error etc. It’s wrong."
Piker, who has identified as a socialist, has previously faced backlash for controversial remarks, including comments about America deserving 9/11, which he later called inappropriate. He also recently drew criticism after advocating for consequences for Democrats unsupportive of Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed, suggesting the party should use "Marxist-Leninist" punishment for those who do not "follow the party line."
Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville has also voiced strong opposition to Piker's rhetoric. Carville stated that he would not remain in the same party as Piker if his influence grew within the Democratic Party. He told Fox News Digital that the party will need to decide its direction in the 2028 primary, with Piker's viewpoints potentially representing a significant wing of the party.
