University of Chicago Faces Second Fraternity Sexual Assault Lawsuit

The University of Chicago is confronting a second sexual assault lawsuit linked to a fraternity party, this time involving the Alpha Delta Phi chapter. A 19-year-old woman, identified as Jane Doe, alleges she was raped at a party held at the fraternity's house on February 7.

This latest legal action comes just over a week after the university was first implicated in sexual assault allegations stemming from another fraternity event. According to the lawsuit filed in Cook County Circuit Court, Doe attended the Alpha Delta Phi party after seeing it promoted on Instagram.

Court documents state that while dancing at the party, a fraternity member offered Doe a drink. She was then taken to a secluded bedroom where she reported feeling unsteady and lightheaded. The lawsuit claims the fraternity member proceeded with unwanted sexual advances, during which Doe was unable to resist. She alleges she pleaded with the individual to use a condom, but he refused and penetrated her without her consent.

Doe reported discovering bloodstains in her underwear the following morning and subsequently went to a hospital. There, she reported the incident to the Chicago Police Department. The national chapter of Alpha Delta Phi confirmed its awareness of the allegations and stated that the member involved had been suspended.

The University of Chicago, which does not officially recognize fraternities as student organizations, issued a statement calling the allegations "very disturbing to the University community." A university spokesperson added that the institution is "prepared to help the Chicago Police Department" in its investigation.

The earlier allegations against another fraternity involved a woman who reportedly also claimed to have been raped during a party. Witnesses in that incident stated that a group of men allegedly cheered from outside a bathroom door, shouting phrases like "when's my turn" and "let me in."

The University of Chicago and the national and Chicago chapters of Alpha Delta Phi did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
