The University of Birmingham has been named the Daily Mail's University of the Year for 2027, outperforming 127 other institutions. This distinction is based on a comprehensive evaluation across a dozen key performance indicators. The university demonstrated particular strength in engineering, medicine, and business programs, contributing to an average graduate earning of £31,400 per year and a high rate of graduates securing high-skilled employment.

This accolade is part of the 2027 Daily Mail University Guide, which assesses universities based on factors deemed most important to students, including three distinct measures of graduate employment success and starting salaries. The guide aims to provide essential information for prospective students navigating university choices amid concerns about degree value and the competitive graduate job market.

Birmingham's success was notably influenced by student feedback, as reflected in its strong performance in the National Student Survey, where it ranked as the most successful among the 24 Russell Group universities. Professor Adam Tickell, vice chancellor of the University of Birmingham, stated that the university's focus on skills, employability, and student success is instrumental in fostering student growth during and after their time at university. He added that the award acknowledges Birmingham as a forward-thinking institution committed to creating opportunities and advancing knowledge.

Separately, Imperial College London topped the Daily Mail university league table for the fourth consecutive year, surpassing Oxford and Cambridge. Imperial College reported the highest average starting salaries among all universities, at £39,000. The guide's findings highlight a significant disparity among top-tier universities regarding graduate job prospects, earnings, student support, and dropout rates.

In other recognitions, Worcester University received the University of the Year for Graduate Jobs award, with nearly 80% of its graduates entering high-skilled employment within 15 months of leaving. Staffordshire University was named Modern University of the Year, recognized as the highest-ranking institution founded after 1992, and previously honored for its success in graduate employability at the Graduate Futures Institute's academic employability awards.
