University of Arizona Suspends Fraternity Activities Amid Misconduct Investigations

The University of Arizona has suspended all fraternity activities due to ongoing investigations into multiple reports of misconduct, including assault, hazing, and drug and alcohol-related behavior. The decision affects nearly half of the school's Interfraternity Council chapters, just seven weeks into the fall semester.

In a letter to the Greek community, Dean of Students Chrissy Lieberman stated that the number of cases and the severity of the concerns were "egregious." These reports follow findings of misconduct against some fraternity chapters in the spring and multiple criminal investigations.

The suspension prohibits fraternities from hosting, attending, participating in, or sponsoring any organizational activities until their advisers meet with Lieberman. These meetings were scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday, and October 12.

Lieberman's letter noted that the Dean's office had reached "capacity" to investigate the misconduct reports, which continued even after a warning from the university president in August about potential consequences.

This action occurs as the "value of the Greek experience is under scrutiny nationwide," according to Lieberman's letter, referencing public concern over how other universities have handled similar allegations. For instance, the university previously suspended activities at the Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity after reports of new members being forced to consume alcohol and live goldfish, alongside degradation and threats.

While the university has not provided immediate details on criminal investigations, a spokesperson for the Tucson Police Department indicated no awareness of recent fraternity-related cases investigated by the city. University officials did not immediately respond to requests for further information.
