A United Airlines flight en route to San Francisco from Shanghai Pudong Airport was diverted to Tokyo Narita Airport on Wednesday after a passenger allegedly caused a significant disturbance aboard the aircraft. The flight, UA858, carrying 285 passengers and 16 crew members, was approximately two hours into its trans-Pacific journey when the diversion occurred.
Witnesses reported that the passenger's behavior escalated shortly after takeoff. One account described the individual tossing documents from seat pockets, shouting profanities, and hitting herself. The disturbance also involved confrontations with cabin crew. During one incident, when a flight purser attempted to get the passenger's attention, the passenger reportedly reacted by elbowing the crew member.
Disruptions continued during meal service, with reports of the passenger throwing food packaging and shouting repeatedly in the cabin. Air marshals on board issued warnings before the flight captain decided to divert to Tokyo for safety reasons. The flight landed in Tokyo at 4:37 p.m. local time.
Upon landing, approximately seven officers from the Chiba Prefectural Police boarded the aircraft and escorted the passenger, who was described as Chinese-speaking, off the plane. Some passengers expressed confusion regarding the passenger's removal. One traveler commented that the situation felt like a combination of misunderstanding, overreaction, and mismanagement.
Following the unscheduled stop and passenger removal, a maintenance issue was identified, causing further delays to the flight's onward journey. The flight eventually departed from Tokyo around 6:15 p.m. and arrived in San Francisco approximately one hour and 40 minutes behind its scheduled time.
