United Flight Returns to Las Vegas After Passenger Threatens Hijacking

United Airlines Flight 1681, en route to Newark Liberty International Airport from Las Vegas, was forced to return to Harry Reid International Airport on Saturday after a crew member observed a passenger sending alarming messages. The flight carried 150 passengers and six crew members.

The flight attendant noticed the passenger texting about intentions to hijack the aircraft and promptly alerted the pilot. The pilot then communicated with air traffic control, stating the plane was returning to Las Vegas due to a "passenger disturbance" and that they had entered "lockdown."

According to the pilot's communication with air traffic control, the passenger was unaware of the situation and had not been restrained. The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that the flight returned safely to Las Vegas around 11:05 p.m. local time.

All passengers were removed from the aircraft upon its return to Las Vegas. The plane subsequently underwent a thorough inspection. Passengers were rebooked and departed on an alternative flight Sunday morning.

The identity of the passenger has not been released. The FAA is continuing its investigation into the incident.
