United Airlines Passenger Reports Being Forced to Sit Next to Man Masturbating

A passenger on a United Airlines flight from Rochester to Newark reported a distressing experience in which she was seated next to a man who allegedly masturbated while staring at her. The woman, a pediatric crisis therapist, said she alerted flight attendants to the situation on the September 3 flight but received minimal assistance.

According to the passenger, who has not been identified, the man began to touch himself inappropriately while staring at her on the 6 a.m. flight. When she informed the flight attendants, she was told she could stand for the remainder of the one-hour journey. Despite her discomfort, she was reportedly asked to return to her seat for landing, as there were no other available seats.

The woman stated she had to remain seated next to the man until the plane landed, enduring the situation for what felt like an extended period. She expressed that she felt uncomfortable on multiple occasions and that the man was not subjected to any immediate repercussions. She noted that the man, described as appearing 'normal' and being between 35 and 40 years old, was allowed to leave the aircraft without intervention.

Upon disembarking, the woman spoke with an agent at the terminal gate. She recounted being treated rudely and being questioned about her concerns, with one agent reportedly asking, "What am I supposed to do about it?" She was advised to file a complaint with the airline.

United Airlines issued a statement acknowledging the incident, which occurred on a flight operated by their partner Republic Airways. "Employees take these matters seriously and are looking into what happened," the airline stated. "We have been in contact with the customer and apologized for her experience." The airline further clarified that customer service staff learned about the incident as passengers were deplaning.

The woman filed complaints with United Airlines, the Federal Aviation Administration, and the FBI. She received a $100 flight credit from United Airlines as compensation, which she described as "insulting" given the flight cost approximately $400. She found the airline's written response to her complaint to be dismissive, using language she felt blamed her for the situation.

Despite the negative experience, the woman indicated she would continue flying with United due to accumulated loyalty miles and an airline credit card. She reported that her boyfriend, who was not traveling with her, was in constant communication and concerned for her safety.
