Undrafted cornerback Mory Bamba made a significant impression during the New York Jets' preseason opener against the Buccaneers on Friday, recording four pass breakups and five total tackles. The performance has placed him in contention for a roster spot. Jets head coach Aaron Glenn lauded Bamba's effort, noting his contributions on both defense and special teams.
Bamba, who saw action on defense and special teams, was targeted nine times and allowed only three receptions. He notably prevented a potential touchdown by breaking up a pass in the end zone. Teammate Brandon Stephens expressed encouragement, stating he had predicted a strong game for Bamba.
Bamba's path to potentially making the Jets roster has been unconventional. He began his collegiate journey in track and field at Division III Wisconsin-Oshkosh before transferring to ASA (Miami) College for his football career at the JUCO level. After a season at Tyler Junior College, he played for BYU from 2022 to 2023. During his senior year at BYU, he recorded 23 total tackles and four pass breakups, starting two games.
"It's been kind of unpredictable," Bamba said after the game. "I just keep my faith in God. Track was something that I really love, but also I knew what I was capable of doing as a football player. I gave that a shot in 2021, and so far I've just been trusting the process."
Despite modest college statistics, Bamba's size and speed have garnered attention. At BYU's Pro Day, he ran a 4.27-second 40-yard dash and recorded an 11-foot-1 broad jump. These metrics, while potentially inflated from official combine measurements, were sufficient to draw NFL interest and get him an opportunity.
"The potential was always there, for sure. It was just a process, a matter of getting out there and putting it against a pretty good team," Bamba added. "The speed should help him on special teams, where he’ll have to excel in order to carve out a role for himself."
Bamba's impressive athleticism, particularly his speed, was evident in his preseason performance, putting him on the radar as he competes to secure a place on the Jets' final roster.
