Two undocumented immigrants, one of whom was driving without a license, face charges in connection with a fatal crash in a New Jersey grocery store parking lot that killed a 9-month-old boy and injured his mother and sister. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has filed detainers against both women, seeking their deportation.
María Cobon-Guzmán, 20, a Guatemalan national, was charged with manslaughter and other offenses after allegedly striking Golda Chana, who was pushing her infant son, Yitzchok Rosenberg, in a stroller, and her 5-year-old daughter on Aug. 28. Investigators stated Cobon-Guzmán has never held a driver's license.
Ariadna Lazaro-Flores, 22, a Mexican national, was charged with knowingly creating a substantial risk of death for allegedly allowing Cobon-Guzmán to drive the Ford Fusion. Both women are being held without bail.
A Department of Homeland Security official told Fox News Digital that both Cobon-Guzmán and Lazaro-Flores crossed the U.S.-Mexico border illegally during the current administration. Lazaro-Flores reportedly crossed the border five times in October 2023 and was removed from the country each time. The DHS official stated Cobon-Guzmán entered the U.S. once and was released, but an immigration judge approved a deportation order on July 31.
Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) has called for the removal of New Jersey's sanctuary status, which he believes hinders cooperation between state and local law enforcement and federal immigration agencies. The congressman also expressed shock that Lazaro-Flores was allegedly able to obtain a driver's license despite her immigration status.
