Underwear Experts Share Tips for Smarter Shopping and Confidence
A new collaboration between Stripe & Stare and Boden highlights common mistakes in underwear purchasing and offers guidance on fit, fabric, and embracing bolder styles.
Many individuals approach underwear purchases as a last-minute necessity rather than a considered wardrobe choice, a habit that experts say leads to discomfort and dissatisfaction. Katie Lopes, co-founder and CEO of Stripe & Stare, and Ann Ceprynski, Head of Print Womenswear at Boden, discussed these common missteps in light of their brands' new limited-edition collaboration.
Lopes suggests that women often wait until their existing underwear is severely worn before buying new pairs, leading to rushed, unsatisfactory purchases. She advocates for treating underwear with the same level of consideration as other key wardrobe items like coats or jeans. "Nobody buys a coat or jeans like that," Lopes stated. "I’d like women to expect more of the thing they wear closest, all day, every day, and to give it the same thought they’d give a pair of shoes and not to accept compromise."
Beyond the timing of purchases, fit is crucial. Lopes emphasizes the importance of trying on underwear, as a garment's appearance on a hanger or mannequin does not guarantee suitability for individual body shapes. She advises finding shapes that work for one's own body and then stocking up on those styles.
Comfort, according to Lopes, is not solely about choosing the plainest or largest styles. True comfort arises from a combination of the garment's shape, fabric, and finishes, including seams, elastic, and even labels. She points to the fabric as the most critical element, noting that materials with a high polyester content can become uncomfortable throughout the day. Stripe & Stare prioritizes TENCEL™ Modal for its softness and breathability, a fabric Lopes considers non-negotiable.
The collaboration also brings Boden's expertise in color and print to the forefront. While many opt for neutral underwear, Ceprynski encourages embracing prints. She suggests that the hesitation often stems from a fear of wearing the print rather than the print overwhelming the wearer. Her advice for those new to prints is to start small, perhaps with accessories or a single printed garment paired with plain items. "Print, without question," Ceprynski said when asked what part of a wardrobe she'd encourage women to be braver with. "Colour people tend to find their way to eventually, but print takes a bit more nerve. Once you wear it well once, you never really go back to plain."
The Stripe & Stare x Boden collection features original and high-rise knickers, thongs, bralettes, and a cami, incorporating nostalgic stripes, playful hearts, and a Boden archival wildflower print. The collection aims to combine Stripe & Stare's signature comfort with Boden's vibrant aesthetic.
Ultimately, the experts suggest that the goal is to find underwear that fits well, feels good, and contributes to a sense of personal confidence, allowing the wearer to "forget about it" and focus on the day ahead. This philosophy extends to embracing prints and colors that bring personal joy, as underwear is often worn for oneself.
