Robert Bush, the former owner of Legacy Independent Funeral Directors in Hull, has admitted to 67 offenses, including fraudulent trading, denying 30 people a decent burial, and giving bereaved relatives the ashes of strangers. The case began in March 2024 when whistleblowers raised concerns with Humberside Police.
Investigators identified 300 victims. Some were families who had paid Bush for funeral plans and services, while others were relatives left questioning the identity of the ashes they received. The deceased were those whose bodies Bush was entrusted to bury or cremate with dignity.
During Bush's five-day sentencing at Hull Crown Court, the scale of his offending became apparent. Court staff prioritized seating for families, providing tissues, water, and support. The details presented were described as harrowing, including the discarding of a stillborn baby's body in a paper bag and leaving another victim's body naked on the floor.
