Lawyers conducting a university-initiated probe at North Carolina's football program are investigating defensive coordinator Steve Belichick for potential drug use and distribution, according to reports.

WRAL reported that the lawyers have focused a series of questions on Steve Belichick, son of head coach Bill Belichick, during interviews. Interviewees were reportedly asked if Steve Belichick used drugs at university facilities or if they had witnessed him doing so. Assistant coaches at UNC can face termination for cause if found to have used or distributed illicit drugs, as stipulated in their employment contracts.

Steve Belichick was placed on an indefinite medical leave in early August. Bill Belichick has stated that it is a medical situation and declined further comment.

The inquiry also includes reports of a sexual relationship between a female recruiting staff member and at least one player, as well as relationships between assistant coaches and recruiting staff. Investigators are seeking documents and text message screenshots as part of their probe.

Lawyers are reportedly questioning individuals about the overall culture of the football program under Bill Belichick and former general manager Michael Lombardi, who resigned on Thursday. The investigation involves speaking with current and former members of the UNC football program, along with parents and staffers.

The UNC football team began its season with a 15-10 victory over TCU in Ireland.
