UMass Dartmouth Freshman Football Player Stabbed to Death at 18

UMass Dartmouth freshman running back Marvins Antoine was fatally stabbed early Saturday morning, the university confirmed. He was 18 years old.

Antoine was pronounced dead at a Rhode Island hospital after the incident, which occurred shortly after midnight. A 19-year-old teammate also sustained non-life-threatening injuries to his head and neck, according to reports.

Providence Police Major David Lapatin stated that an investigation is underway, and a suspect is in custody with the UMass Dartmouth police department. The two players had reportedly been with teammates at Mezzo Lounge in Providence earlier in the evening.

According to police, a fight broke out in a parking lot near a Wendy's restaurant on Charles Street in Providence around 12:30 a.m. ET. Lapatin indicated that the individuals involved were likely college students, aged 18 or 19.

Antoine, a 5-foot-10, 180-pound tailback from Boston, attended Durfee High School in Fall River, Massachusetts. He had not appeared in any of the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs' three games this season. The university's football team, a Division III program, currently holds a 1-2 record for the season.

"The entire UMass Dartmouth community mourns the loss of Marvins Antoine," said Ryan C. Merrill, the school’s assistant vice chancellor of strategic communications and media relations. "We extend our thoughts and prayers to Marvins’ family and friends during this difficult time."

UMass Dartmouth is located approximately 30 minutes from Providence.
