A Ukrainian MiG-29 fighter jet pilot successfully downed a Russian Shahed attack drone by employing a unique aerodynamic maneuver. Footage of the incident shows the MiG-29 flying closely beneath the drone, using its turbulent wake to destabilize the unmanned aircraft and cause it to crash.

The Russian forces have been utilizing Shahed drones, which are of Iranian origin, as a component of their offensive in Ukraine. These drones are described as relatively light and susceptible to being thrown off course by aerodynamic disturbances.

This incident occurs amidst an intensification of Russian aerial attacks on Ukraine. In an overnight assault, Russia targeted Kyiv and its surrounding regions with numerous missiles and drones, resulting in at least 16 reported fatalities and numerous injuries. Ukrainian officials stated that the attack, which lasted for hours, involved a combination of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones, aiming to inflict maximum damage on civilian infrastructure.

Ukrainian air defense systems are reportedly strained by the frequency and scale of these attacks. President Volodymyr Zelensky has appealed for additional air defense interceptors, such as the U.S.-made Patriot system, but international stockpiles are noted to be low. The Ukrainian air force reported that hits were recorded at 28 locations across the country during the recent overnight barrage.

Russian defense officials claim their strikes targeted industrial sites involved in the manufacturing of cruise missiles and drones, as well as an ammunition depot and a logistics center. Ukraine's intelligence agency has suggested that Russia possesses substantial stockpiles of missiles and possesses the capability to produce a significant number of them monthly. These claims could not be independently verified.

In parallel, Ukraine has been conducting its own long-range drone strikes on Russian territory, targeting facilities such as oil depots and warehouses of major online retailers. These actions have reportedly led to fuel shortages within Russia and disrupted domestic commerce.
