A Ukrainian drone attack in Russia's Samara region on Sunday killed one person and injured three others, including a child, according to local officials. The strike also damaged residential buildings and an industrial site in the area.
Russian media reports indicated that the Syzran Oil Refinery was the target of the attack. The refinery, owned by the oil and gas company Rosneft, is located approximately 800 kilometers (500 miles) east of the Russia-Ukraine border and has been a frequent target of Ukrainian forces.
In a separate incident in the Rostov region, a tanker was damaged in a drone attack near the Azov-Black Sea maritime canal. The governor of Rostov, Yuri Slyusar, stated that the tanker was empty and there was no risk of an oil spill.
These strikes on Russia's oil facilities are part of Ukraine's strategy to disrupt the Russian economy. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has referred to these operations as "long-range sanctions" aimed at pressuring Moscow to halt its invasion.
The attacks on oil infrastructure have contributed to a fuel crisis in Russia, leading to gasoline shortages and rationing in several regions. In response, Russia has intensified its bombardment of Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.
On Sunday, Russia's Ministry of Defense announced it had attacked the ports of Odesa and Chornomorsk in Ukraine's Odesa region. Ukrainian officials had not yet commented on these claims at the time of reporting.
