Ukrainian basketball player Kate Koval has left the Louisiana State University (LSU) women's basketball program, citing the team's decision to sign a Russian player as the reason for her departure. Koval, 20, announced her decision following the arrival of Russian athlete Anna Minaeva.
Koval stated on social media that the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine directly influenced her choice. "For me, this war is not distant or abstract. People close to me have been killed and wounded in Russian attacks, and places where I grew up and first began playing basketball have been destroyed by missile strikes," she wrote.
She explained that the war's impact on her family and friends made her question her place at LSU. "My father serves in the Ukrainian military and takes tremendous pride in defending his country against Russian aggression," Koval said. "The timing of this situation and the deep personal effect it has had on me, my family and those we care about who continue to live through and fight this war ultimately made me question whether LSU remained the right place for me."
Koval, who was projected to be LSU's starting center for the upcoming season, expressed gratitude for her time with the team and the LSU community. "I felt I had found a home at LSU, and I am incredibly grateful for my team-mates who became family, as well as my coaches, staff, professors and the entire LSU community," she stated. "I will always cherish the relationships, experiences, and memories I made there."
Koval has two years of college eligibility remaining. While the transfer portal has closed, she hopes the NCAA will consider her circumstances and allow her to join another university for the upcoming season. She emphasized that her decision was difficult but necessary to remain true to her values and country.
