Ukraine Strikes Russian Missile Plant Amid Moscow Drone Disruptions
Ukrainian cruise missiles hit a facility producing components for Russian weapons, while a drone swarm grounded flights in the Russian capital.
Ukraine launched cruise missiles that destroyed a key Russian plant manufacturing components for Moscow's missile systems, while a separate drone swarm caused widespread flight disruptions in the Russian capital, leading to an evacuation at a skyscraper housing government ministries. The main production building of Proton-Electrotex in Orel, located approximately 100 miles from the Ukrainian border, was struck Friday, according to The Kyiv Independent.
The plant is a producer of semiconductor devices, LEDs, and electronic components essential for the manufacturing of Russian weaponry. Video footage showed significant explosions and thick plumes of black smoke emanating from the facility.
Ukraine's general staff stated that the attack "complicates the production of components for cruise and ballistic missiles, with which the enemy hits Ukrainian cities," as reported by The Kyiv Independent. Regional Governor Andrei Klychkov confirmed three fatalities resulting from a fire caused by the attack, though these individuals were reportedly not inside the plant itself.
In Moscow, the drone activity led to the cancellation of 85 flights and delays for 229 others at Sheremetyevo Airport on Saturday, with operations resuming around 5 p.m. local time. Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin reported that 17 drones were intercepted en route to the capital. The IQ-quarter skyscraper, a business district building that houses several Russian government ministries including the Digital Development Ministry, Economic Development Ministry, and the Industry and Trade Ministry, was evacuated as a result of the drone threat.
These events mark a continuation of aviation disruptions in Moscow, as drone-related threats have repeatedly forced temporary airport closures throughout Russia's ongoing conflict with Ukraine.
Separately, First Lady Melania Trump's office announced Friday that she facilitated a localized ceasefire in the Ukrainian city of Oleshky, which is under Russian occupation. This ceasefire, set to commence on October 29, aims to allow elderly civilians to depart and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid, including food and medicine, to the city.
