Ukraine Seeks New U.S. Sanctions Against Russian Entities
Kyiv will present a list of Russian companies, vessels, and individuals to the Trump administration and Congress for potential sanctions under a recently enacted law.
Ukraine plans to submit a detailed list of Russian companies, vessels, and individuals to the Trump administration and Congress this week, advocating for their inclusion in new U.S. sanctions. This request comes under the framework of the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act, which President Donald Trump signed into law on September 18.
Denys Sienik, the chargé d'affaires at Ukraine's embassy in Washington, stated that a primary focus of Kyiv's request would be several Russian companies involved in producing components for Russia's version of Starlink, a satellite internet system Moscow aims to complete by year's end. While the main firm developing the network is already under U.S. sanctions, companies manufacturing its components are not. Sienik emphasized that the completion of this satellite constellation could provide Russia with real-time battlefield information, potentially proving devastating to Ukraine, particularly as winter approaches.
Ukraine also expressed interest in utilizing Starlink services within Russia to target Russian operations. Additionally, Kyiv is seeking enhanced measures against ships implicated in Russia's "ghost fleet," which is reportedly used to bypass international restrictions on oil sales.
The U.S. administration has until October 18 to determine which Russian entities, if any, will be sanctioned under the new law.
Beyond sanctions, Ukraine is requesting that the U.S. administration and American industries publicly condemn Russian attacks targeting the operations of U.S. companies on Ukrainian territory, according to Sienik.
