Ukraine's Starshield Access Restored Amid Unanswered Questions
The US military satellite network's functionality is returning, but the cause of its throttling remains unclear, sparking uncertainty and blame.

Ukraine's access to Starshield, a secure military offshoot of SpaceX's satellite system, is being restored after a throttling incident earlier this week that hampered its ability to deploy interceptor drones. The restoration is expected by Thursday, but questions persist about who was responsible for limiting the network's speed and the reasons behind it.
Denys Sienik, a top diplomat at the Ukraine Embassy in Washington, confirmed the improvement in Starshield speeds, expressing hope for a full resumption to previous levels. "Speed is critical for logistics, and for intercepting the jet-powered Shahed drones, especially when Russia constantly uses them to attack our cities and commit war crimes," Sienik stated. He highlighted that the throttling occurred during one of the most significant Shahed drone attacks, raising concerns about the timing.
Ukraine also utilizes the American satellite network to guide long-range drone strikes into Russia. The throttling of Starshield access, which began Tuesday, coincided with a period of tension between President Trump and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk suggested that the federal government, and by extension President Trump, controlled the Starshield systems and dictated any limitations on speed or usage.
However, a senior U.S. official told The Post that Trump did not request any restrictions on Ukraine's Starshield access. Another source indicated that Musk's assertion about the Trump administration's involvement might be inaccurate. The White House has also informed Ukrainian officials that it does not have control over SpaceX's operations, according to Axios.
Sienik noted that the Ukrainian government has not yet received official communication from SpaceX or the Pentagon regarding the outage. The lack of a clear explanation for the disruption has amplified unease between Kyiv and Washington regarding the reliability of the critical communication infrastructure.
