Ukraine Launches Massive Drone Attack on Russia Amid Elections, Hits Oil Infrastructure

Ukraine launched what Russia described as its largest drone and missile attack of the war, deploying over 1,000 unmanned aerial vehicles targeting Russian energy infrastructure and logistics facilities, including a major oil refinery in the Moscow region. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy hailed the strikes as a response to Russian aggression and a push for the Kremlin to "end its brutal war and choose peace."

"Tonight in the Moscow region, our long-range responses were felt very acutely," Zelenskyy stated Sunday on X. "One of the key enterprises of the Russian Federation's oil industry and an aggressor's logistics facility have been struck. These are billions of dollars that support the war machine."

The attacks occurred on the final day of Russia’s parliamentary elections, a vote held amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that the capital's air defenses destroyed 450 drones targeting the city, though some still managed to damage the Moscow Oil Refinery and a residential building. The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed its forces downed a total of 1,110 Ukrainian drones across Russia, Crimea, and the Black Sea.

Sobyanin characterized the attack as "unprecedented" and "clearly planned with the aim of disrupting the elections," but asserted that "the enemy did not succeed."

Zelenskyy also highlighted the scale of Russian attacks on Ukraine in the preceding week, stating that Russia had launched more than 2,000 attack drones, 1,700 aerial bombs, and 19 missiles. He urged international partners, including the United States, Europe, and G7 nations, to implement new sanctions against Russia to "force peace through strength."

Ukraine's strikes targeted energy facilities, which Zelenskyy referred to as supporting the "war machine." He called for de-escalation steps in energy and food security, emphasizing the need for political will from international allies.

The conflict also saw Russian attacks within Ukraine. A drone strike hit a monastery in the Kherson region on Saturday, killing a clergyman and wounding four people. In the Kyiv region, a Russian attack on Saturday night resulted in the deaths of three children and their mother. Earlier in the week, a Russian official involved in the elections was reportedly killed in an attack in Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia region, though details could not be independently verified.

Russia has been conducting parliamentary elections not only within its borders but also in four Ukrainian regions it claimed and in Crimea, territories it occupied. President Vladimir Putin had framed the vote as a demonstration of public support for Russian troops engaged in the conflict.
