UK Youth Parliament Funding Under Threat, Member Cautions Against Cuts

A taxpayer-funded program designed to foster interest in politics among young people is facing potential discontinuation, prompting a plea from one of its members not to axe the initiative simply because "money is tight."

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has indicated it will not commit to future grants for the UK Youth Parliament, a development that has raised concerns.

"If the government is to cut the Youth Parliament there should be reasons and there has to be alternatives, even if the funding is tight," Aman Fatima, a Member of Youth Parliament (MYP) for Essex, told BBC Politics East. She stressed the importance of having alternatives if the program is scrapped, noting that "young people are the next generation" of government.

Fatima highlighted the program's role in amplifying young voices, particularly in a significant setting like the House of Commons. "Money is tight but you also want young people's opinions; them to tell you what's wrong and the challenges they are facing," she said. "And the [Youth Parliament] really helps young people get their voice out there, especially in a big place such as the House of Commons."

The government stated it is developing a new scheme to enhance youth involvement in democracy and decision-making, with further details expected in the autumn. Established in 1999, the UK Youth Parliament convenes at the House of Commons and comprises over 300 elected members aged between 11 and 18.

The program is currently managed by the National Youth Agency. Fatima argued that the parliament provides a crucial platform for young individuals to voice their perspectives and articulate the challenges they encounter.
