UK Woman Trades Three Jobs for Thai Lifestyle, Cuts Living Costs
Sophia Moulson details her move from West Sussex to Chiang Mai, where she now works fewer hours and lives on a significantly reduced budget.
A 23-year-old woman from West Sussex has relocated to Thailand, exchanging a demanding schedule of three jobs for a more relaxed lifestyle and reduced living expenses. Sophia Moulson, formerly a salon barber, care assistant, and freelance hairstylist and fitness coach in the UK, now works only a few hours per day in Chiang Mai.
Before her move in April, Moulson described her previous routine as working 11 to 15 hours daily, often seven days a week, with minimal free time. Her income was sufficient to live rent-free with her parents, but general living costs, including car fuel and phone bills, accumulated. She stated her focus was on building a different life for herself and was willing to put in the extensive hours.
In Chiang Mai, Moulson now pays approximately £500 per month for a luxury apartment that includes a pool and security. Her monthly electricity and water bills are around £50. She also rents a motorbike for about £57 a month, with a full tank of fuel costing roughly £4.77 and lasting over a week. Dining out is also considerably cheaper, with meals typically costing between £5 and £10, and she noted that eating locally can be less expensive than cooking at home.
Moulson estimates her total monthly outgoings in Thailand, including rent, food, shopping, and activities, are around £1,500. She was inspired to move by a desire to experience different cultures and make the most of her youth, noting she had no significant commitments like a mortgage or children tying her down.
She found Thailand to be a place she could call home, unlike other destinations she had visited. The move has allowed her to slow down her pace of life, dedicating time to fitness, social activities, and creative pursuits alongside her businesses. She highlighted a significant improvement in her work-life balance, no longer feeling the pressure for every minute of her day to be productive.
Moulson also expressed pleasant surprise at the quality and affordability of healthcare in Thailand, noting she has received prompt medical attention at a reasonable cost when needed. She is learning to speak Thai and has no immediate plans to return to the UK, viewing her experience as a potentially long-term home or a significant chapter in her life that she is grateful to have had the courage to undertake.
