Temperatures are poised to decrease across the United Kingdom this weekend, offering a respite from the recent period of intensely hot weather for some regions. This cooldown is attributed to fresher northerly winds that will cause readings to fall by several degrees in various locations, particularly in Scotland, Northern Ireland, and northern England.
Despite the anticipated drop, temperatures are expected to remain warmer than average for much of the UK, including southern England. This region has experienced heatwave conditions, meeting or exceeding the threshold for 12 consecutive days. For northern Scotland, maximum temperatures on Saturday could be up to seven degrees Celsius lower than those recorded on Thursday. Similarly, northwestern England is predicted to see a temperature decrease of five to six degrees Celsius from Thursday's highs, bringing daily maximums into the low 20s Celsius by Saturday.
The Meteorological Office noted that a high-pressure system is expected to remain near the UK at least into early next week. With this high pressure centered to the west of the UK, a northerly wind will develop over the weekend, contributing to the temperature decline.
While the heat is set to subside in some areas, the forecast indicates a continued lack of significant rainfall. The prevailing high-pressure system is expected to maintain dry and sunny conditions, contributing to an unusually dry month.
