UK Train Operators Divided on First-Class Experience

First-class train travel in the UK presents a stark contrast between operators, with some providing en-suite cabins and chef-prepared meals, while others offer little more than extra legroom for a significantly higher cost. This disparity has led to renewed debate about the value of first-class tickets, particularly as calls emerge to re-evaluate their use during peak hours to alleviate overcrowding in standard carriages.

LNER (London and North Eastern Railway) is frequently cited as offering the best first-class experience. The company has invested in enhancing its first-class lounges, reopening one at Leuchars station in Fife with complimentary refreshments and revamping its London King’s Cross lounge. LNER also introduced new first-class menus in September, featuring dishes like chicken Milanese with cavatelli pasta and a frangipane tart. A new fleet of ten trains, named 'Serenza,' is set to enhance the journey with improved lighting. An upgrade from standard class typically costs between £39 and £49.

Avanti West Coast also garners praise for its premier service, which includes dedicated staff serving complimentary food and drinks directly to passengers. Passengers benefit from larger seats and increased legroom. Menu options have included smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, beef stew, and mini brioche sliders. The operator's lounges offer complimentary snacks, comfortable seating, free WiFi, charging points, and private restrooms. First-class upgrades via the Seatfrog app can start from approximately £47.

The Caledonian Sleeper, operating one of the UK's longest direct rail routes, offers unique overnight travel with premium options. Passengers can choose from reclining seats starting around £50 to private compartments with beds and en-suite facilities in premium cabins, priced at £570. Premier services include priority dining and access to the Club Car.

Great Western Railway provides a solid first-class offering, including separate seating and onboard food and drink. Its key attraction is access to the Pullman Dining service, which features meals prepared by an onboard chef. Two-course meals start at £40, with three-course options at £49. Offerings have included king oyster bourguignon and fillet steak.

In contrast, CrossCountry has been ranked poorly for service reliability, including being named the UK's worst operator for cancellations in a recent analysis. Its first-class offering, available on long-distance Voyager trains, provides free snacks and non-alcoholic drinks with extra legroom, but lacks the premium amenities such as lounges found with top-tier operators.

Thameslink is identified as one of the less impressive first-class options, along with Southern and c2c. While these services offer a first-class carriage with tables and additional legroom, passengers pay solely for the seat, with no food or drink service or lounge access.
