Pigeons have created a persistent mess on Diss's High Street, prompting local authorities to seek solutions after various deterrents failed to resolve the issue. Diss Town Council has attempted to address the problem by employing ultrasonic sound devices and bringing in hawks, but these measures have not deterred the birds from congregating.
Mayor Declan Craggs of Diss, Norfolk, stated that the town council has explored multiple avenues to combat the pigeon population on Mere Street. He emphasized the importance of community involvement, suggesting that if residents and businesses took greater responsibility for their immediate surroundings, the appearance of the High Street would significantly improve. In line with this, the council has encouraged businesses in the town center to install spikes and other deterrents on their building ledges.
The issue of pigeon nuisance is not unique to Diss. Earlier this year, Norwich City Council also faced challenges in managing a large pigeon population at its market.
While the town council's actions have garnered support from many locals, others believe the pigeons are being unfairly targeted. The debate highlights a division in the community regarding the pest status of the birds and the appropriate methods for managing their presence in urban areas.
