Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is set to be designated a threat to national security by the UK government, under new powers that will be rapidly advanced through Parliament. The move, announced by Sir Keir Starmer, means that members of the IRGC could face up to life imprisonment.
The IRGC, described as the feared military arm of the Iranian regime, will be formally banned. In addition to the IRGC, the Iranian group Islamic Movement of Companions of the Right and Russia’s GRU military intelligence volunteer corps are also included in the proposed ban.
This designation signals a significant escalation in the UK's stance against entities deemed to be national security threats. The legislation will require parliamentary approval before coming into effect.
