UK to Aid Saudi Arabia in Defending Oil Infrastructure

Britain will provide military assistance to Saudi Arabia to help defend its oil infrastructure against missile attacks, Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced. The Royal Air Force (RAF) will supply air-to-air refueling support for jets tasked with intercepting drones and missiles launched by Houthi rebels in Yemen.

This decision marks the first new military deployment authorized by Burnham since he assumed office in July. Saudi Arabia sought international backing after Houthi attacks disrupted a key oil pipeline leading to the country's Red Sea coast. The disruption has contributed to a surge in global oil prices, impacting petrol and diesel costs in the UK.

"We have received a request from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for military support, and on the advice of the defence secretary and the foreign secretary, I agreed to that request for defensive air-to-air refuelling," Burnham stated while traveling to New York for the United Nations General Assembly. He emphasized that the action aims to "secure the interests of Britain and the wider region" by preventing further disruptions to oil pathways.

The deployment is expected to commence within days and is described as "time-limited," though officials suggest the RAF's involvement could extend for several weeks. An RAF A400M Voyager aircraft, currently stationed in Cyprus, will be utilized for the refueling missions. The aircraft will support defensive operations against missile attacks but will not be involved in any offensive actions against Houthi positions in Yemen.

The Houthis are widely perceived as proxies for Iran, which seeks to disrupt oil supplies to exert economic pressure on Western nations. Burnham indicated that he would also discuss the Middle East crisis with Donald Trump during their meetings at the UN General Assembly, stating, "We want to see an end to the conflict as quickly as possible and we stand ready to play our part."
