UK Teenagers Seek More Work Experience and Job Guidance

A significant portion of UK teenagers believes their schools should offer more work experience opportunities and provide greater guidance on how to apply for jobs, according to a survey for the BBC. The online poll, conducted by Survation, surveyed 2,000 individuals aged 13 to 18.

The findings, part of the Teen Summit project by Radio 5 Live and BBC Bitesize, highlight a desire for practical preparation for the workforce. Over 40% of teenagers surveyed expressed a wish for more work experience, with a similar percentage calling for increased assistance with job application skills. This suggests a gap between educational offerings and the practical needs of young people entering the job market.

As part of the project, four students from Newcastle—Param, McKenzie, Jasmine, and Javaris—were followed as they undertook their first work experience placements. Their experiences aimed to provide a firsthand look at the challenges and opportunities faced by teenagers transitioning from education to the world of work.
